Over the past decade, streaming has established itself as the predominant method of music consumption for virtually everyone. Whether accessed through smartphones, computers, or gaming consoles, individuals can easily load their preferred streaming service, such as Spotify or Apple Music, and enjoy their favourite songs. The convenience and vast library of songs available through streaming have posed a challenge to the traditional format of music albums, making it increasingly challenging for them to maintain their status as the primary source of music. Nevertheless, a few popular artists have managed to transcend these challenges. Taylor Swift, the leading female music artist, and Ed Sheeran, the foremost male artist, have both achieved remarkable success in selling their albums, even as music streaming reaches its peak. This blog post will illuminate the achievements of each artist's album discography, shed light on the remarkable accomplishments of their most recent albums, and contemplate what can be learned from their career success.
Taylor Swift: A Dominant Presence in the
Music Landscape
Taylor Swift's career has seen continuous growth since her 2006 debut as a country music star, consistently averaging 5,715,909 album sales throughout her discography. A significant portion of her sales, particularly from 2006 to 2014, can be attributed to the absence of music streaming. Notably, her 2014 album 1989 achieved a remarkable 10,685,000 album sales, whereas her 2017 release Reputation, saw a substantial decline with 3,675,000 album sales as a result of streaming. Nevertheless, these figures remain impressive given the challenges all artists face in the streaming era.
Her latest album Midnights, released in 2022, is her best-selling album since Reputation, with 3,577,550 album sales. The question arises: "How has she achieved this in an era dominated by streaming?" The answer lies in her adept use of marketing, collectible albums, and unwavering fan support.
Marketing plays a pivotal role in Taylor Swift's success. Prior to Midnights, Swift was relatively inactive on social media, leaving fans in the dark for her previous albums, Folklore and Evermore. However, her social media activity surged when Midnights was announced at the VMAs. She shared behind-the-scenes content and hosted nightly TikTok sessions titled Midnights Mayhem With Me, where she revealed one track title each night. In line with her social media presence, she introduced a merchandise line, offering $75 hoodies bundled with four vinyl albums, each featuring unique cover ar and disc colors.

Ed Sheeran: One of the Biggest Male
Artists in America
Ed Sheeran shares similar album sales success with Swift, averaging 3,935,500 sales across six albums from 2011 to 2023. His highest-selling album, x (“Multiply”), reached a total of 9,112,500 sales. However, between 2019 and 2023 sales for Sheeran’s albums have declined significantly with an average of 931,667, attributed to the streaming era.
His latest album − ("Subtract"), released on May 5, 2023, has amassed 425,000 sales in six months, a notable feat given its short time in the market. If it follows the trends of No.6 Collaborations Project and = (“Equals”), it could project 1 to 2 million streams in a full year.
During his peak album-selling years, Sheeran adopted various marketing strategies for music artist growth. He primarily leveraged social media, particularly Twitter and Snapchat, to connect with fans and generate hype by posting teaser videos of hit singles. Another effective strategy was his commitment to authenticity, creating relatable music without excessive synthetic elements, making him a unique artist that built a strong fan base and boosted album sales.

What can we learn from them?
Both Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran exemplify highly effective strategies for engaging with their fan base and achieving significant album sales, offering valuable insights for emerging artists seeking success. Notably, maintaining an active presence on social media has become pivotal for fan interactions, providing a platform to share teasers, album updates, and much more to market an artist’s music . Additionally, associating album releases with collectible merchandise, such as Taylor Swift's hoodie and custom vinyl albums, can enhance the incentive for fans to purchase the album as it offers additional avenues for connecting with their favourite artists. Furthermore, the unwavering commitment to authenticity plays a fundamental role in cultivating a dedicated fan base as it assures fans of receiving genuine music from an artist dedicated to producing their best work.
